We are so sad to share that Grandma Duggar (Mary) passed away at home on Sunday afternoon, June 9th, 2019 at the age of 78. Mary Lester Duggar grew up in Farmington, Arkansas and was married almost 50 years to J.L. (Jimmy Lee) Duggar who preceded her in death.
Mary found great joy in sharing her love for Jesus and her own story of how at age 15 she asked Christ to forgive her for her sins. It was at that time she committed the rest of her life to live for Him, a commitment she kept with devotion. She loved to share with others how they too could be forgiven of their sins, live a fulfilling life as a Christian, and one day spend eternity in heaven.
She is survived by her daughter Deanna Duggar and her son Jim Bob Duggar, 21 grandchildren (Amy King, Joshua Duggar, Jana Duggar, John-David Duggar, Jill Dillard, Jessa Seewald, Jinger Vuolo, Joseph Duggar, Josiah Duggar, Joy-Anna Forsyth, Jedidiah Duggar, Jeremiah Duggar, Jason Duggar, James Duggar, Justin Duggar, Jackson Duggar, Johannah Duggar, Jennifer Duggar, Tyler Hutchins, Jordyn-Grace Duggar, and Josie Duggar) 13 great-grandchildren (Mackynzie Duggar, Michael Duggar, Marcus Duggar, Israel Dillard, Meredith Duggar, Spurgeon Seewald, Henry Seewald, Samuel Dillard, Mason Duggar, Gideon Forsyth, Garrett Duggar, Felicity Vuolo, and Ivy Seewald), with several more great-grandchildren on the way!
Mary Duggar was also a successful real estate broker who owned Good Neighbor Realty and was noted in Northwest Arkansas for being the broker who put together the property sale for the John Q. Hammons Holiday Inn & Convention Center in Springdale.
Grandma Mary Duggar has been on the TLC shows, “19 Kids & Counting” and “Counting On” with her family for over 15 years. Many referred to Mary as “America’s Grandma.” She is greatly loved and will be missed so very much! She lived a tremendous life as a follower of Christ, a wife, a devoted mother, a loving mother-in-law, and a much-loved grandmother. Proverbs 31:10-31 describes the virtuous woman, indeed she personified these beautiful verses with her life.

Firstly, let me say how deeply sorry I am for your loss and grief. Though I never met Grandma Duggar, she and her example had a profound impact in my life. 5 years ago I become an aunt for the first time and I was of course elated! And I was honored to be one of the first babysitters. At times it was difficult, because I didn’t agree with all of their parenting choices so stubbornly I would do things my way and it created some strain between my brother and I. That all changed one day when I was watching an episode of 19 kids and counting and Grandma Duggar was babysitting. In an episode, Michelle or Jim Bob (I don’t remember exactly who) said in an interview that they can trust Grandma Duggar because their parenting standards would be upheld when they were gone. That changed my whole outlook, I wanted to be trusted too. I apologized to my brother and his wife and decided to follow their lead with the kids. And I am happy to report I am the #1 babysitter (3x a week)for my niece and twin nephews and my brother proudly says it’s because he can trust me to enforced his principles and love the kids. I wouldn’t have such a close relationship with my brother and his kids without her Godly example and respect for her kids and Grandkids. I am so thankful to her! Thank you for letting me share my small story, you are all in my prayers.

While I never had the pleasure to meet Grandma Duggar in person, I’m horribly saddened to hear of her sudden passing because through watching your shows and following your journey through social media I feel like I’ve come to know her and the beautiful, selfless person she was. I felt like I knew Grandma Mary through the shows. I love how she was there for all the important events in the kids lives, most of the time picking up and going on trips to help with the kids.

I loved grandma Duggar. She was full of life and had so much wisdom. She was so strong when she had to deal with the death of her husband and I applaud her for that. I will miss her dearly. I remember always seeing her in the background of whatever was happening in the house, an interview, a taping or just everyone having a good time. I am so sorry for your loss! I feel your pain. Even though, I didn’t know her personally, I still feel sadness that she is gone. She was one of my favorite of the Duggar family. I like her peacefulness, serenity, advice, and how much she loved Jesus our Savior. I really do wish I would have known her in person and converse with her. My prayers go out to your family. What happened to her? She always seemed like she was full of life and healthy! Did she pass in the family’s home?

I loved it when you guys traveled to Israel and you went to the Dead Sea. At the Sea Grandma Duggar had a ball rubbing that mud all over her and even taking some with her. It was so nice to see her really enjoying herself and making the most of it.

My favorite ‘story’ of Grandma Mary Duggar is reading what her children and grandchildren have said about her. What a fabulous legacy she has left on earth. As a Christian lady, wife, mother and a grandmother it warms my heart to hear how MUCH she loved The Lord, her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren and everyone else that God placed in her life, even if only for a few moments. As Christians we KNOW that she is ‘Resting in peace’! We know that immediately upon the physical death of her earthly body that she was in Heaven in the presence of God, the angels (created beings) and all of the born again Christians that were in Heaven before her. We rejoice for Grandma Mary Duggar and all that Heaven is for her. We know that The Holy Spirit will give his comfort and peace to each of her family and friends that are missing her until they meet again and spend eternity together. Oh death where is thy sting? As humans God has given us emotions and He sees and knows the sadness of each one that is grieving because of not having her here on earth anymore. He will help you all. How loving he is to allow us the privilege of having amazingly wonderful people in our lives and for the memories we get to keep when they leave us for a while. You all are in my prayers.

I was saddened to hear of Grandma Duggar’s passing. She wasn’t on the TV show often, but when she was, you could quickly get a sense of her personality and character. She had a quiet way about her. You had to smile on those occasions when one of the grandchildren would talk her into doing something she really didn’t want to do. She willingly obliged with a smile on her face. I remember the episodes that showed her always tackling the mounds of laundry with a quiet efficiency. She always seemed genuinely happy and contented, something that can only come from the Lord. I know the family will miss her greatly, but she has run her race and finished her course and now she is receiving her reward. Prayers for the family during this difficult time.
I am just a stranger, and fan of the Duggars. I never met Grandma Duggar. I just know from watching the show that she seemed like the type of grandma everyone would dream of having, and it radiate from the television screen right into the heart of many viewers; I am sure. I’ve been fighting tears ever since I heard she had died yesterday, but what has been going through my head is Isaiah 49:21. Maybe it isn’t exactly appropriate, as she was hardly bereft of children or grandchildren, but I expect right now she is learning how many spiritual children she has that she did not bear. Through her Godly influence, both on us and on you, many, many millions have been reached for Christ. There are generations who will exist who would never have been born if she had not made that decision to accept Christ and live for Him, and to raise her family to do likewise. In a world where in law relations are always the butt of the joke, and always expected to be bad, your love for her, Michelle, is probably her biggest legacy in my eyes. It was always very clear how very dear you were to one another, and it was a beautiful thing. Take comfort in the fact that the first instant of her eternity with Jesus was more wonderful than all of life together, and that was pretty amazing. I can’t wait to meet her in heaven.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I’ve been watching y’all show since day one that y’all did a road trip when all the children were young , I’ve watched y’all on 19 kids, and now on counting on. I love all the shows when y’all would take Grandma Mary with you. It’s great that y’all took her in and included her with the activities. When she became a widow loneliness is a long word for them. Elderly people won’t tell you they are lonely. Thank you for taking care of her just as I took care of my mom for 4 years before she passed and 12 years that I took care of my step-father before he passed. God is great and will Bless all those who don’t forget about their elderly parents. Love y’all lots and again I’m sorry for the loss of a great person.

I am so sorry for your loss. I’m sure Mary was a big part of your family and loved dearly. I myself had a grandpa whom live with us for as long as I can remember and was a big influence in my life. I especially liked how Mary was in charge of doing laundry. That’s one of “my†favorite chores and wanted you to “adopt†me so I could come help her. LOL! God rest her soul and peace be with you all. So sorry for your loss. My favorite memory of Grandma Duggar is when some of the girls pulled her out of the laundry room and gave her an in home spa day. She was such a good egg about it!! Seems she was always up for a good time. Monday morning as I was sitting outside having my coffee she came to my mind. And then I came indoors to read the news on my phone as is my habit and routine and saw she had passed. I couldn’t believe it and chalked it up to another God thing. He had sent me good thoughts of to help with my grief and shock. Her legacy will live on. She touched the lives of thousands and will be missed by all. My prayers for the family. Mary is a beautiful soul, that was so clear from watching 19 kids and counting. Mary I think, was in the background doing so much important work helping everyone. I know Anna had shared what a tremendous support Mary had been to her during a difficult time. I know she will be deeply missed. Heaven’s gain.

I’m so sorry for your loss and my Nana Dugger passed away early on Tuesday morning January 29th from stage 4 breast cancer and she became a Christian at age 6 and she led me to Jesus when I was 5 years old and if I died today and if Jesus asked me why should I let you into Heaven my answer would be because I was bought by the blood of Jesus.

I had the privilege of meeting grandma Duggar when the family came to speak at Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs. What a special lady! I’ve watched all of the TV shows over the yrs. and remember how she stepped up after moving in with Michelle and Jim Bob after her husband passed, to take on the monumental task of helping to do the family laundry. This was when all the kids were still at home so no small task. I remember thinking, “Wow, what a saint to do such an enormous yet needed job.” She touched so many with her sweet, loving attitude. She is safe in the arms of Jesus and rejoicing I’m sure to be in her eternal home with the One who she loved and served for so many yrs. Prayers for the family, as I know she will be greatly missed.

Thinking of you all at this sad time. I’ve been a huge fan of the show for 15 years and enjoyed the peaceful, calm presence of Mary in the show. I recall watching an episode where the girls pampered her as a birthday treat and she sat there getting her nails and feet done with a face mask on! Grandma Duggar’s fun-loving spirit and deep love for her family shone through everything she did, and the family’s moving tributes over the past couple of days have made that even more apparent. What a wonderful way to go home!! No suffering just close your eyes and when you open them Jesus is there. We all should be so lucky. I know you all will miss her but for her it must have been great. So sorry for your loss. Praying for your family. About 3-4 months ago, I ran into her at a hotel where we were staying. We were at breakfast and she had the biggest smile on her face as she greeted me. I didn’t realize who she was at the time. And I thought she must be a very joyful person because she could smile like that so early in the morning. As I walked away I realized who she was. She made a wonderful impression, you could see God’s love on her face

Mary was the epitome of grace and dignity. Always thinking of others, always giving of herself. I know she will be missed by her family and friends, but heaven has gained a true angel! CJ Wells has said it best for those of us who lose loved ones: “That which we lose we mourn, But must rejoice that we have ever had.” Doesn’t take away the pain of losing Mary, but hope that it gives the family some comfort and peace knowing they had her wisdom and love for so many years. RIP Mary–I will miss you!!

I couldn’t believe what I was reading, I always liked how she loved all the kids and helped you all so much. It was also fun to see her go on big trips with you all. I feel very bad for Amy, I know how much she loved Mary and she won’t be the same.

I fell in love with both Grandma and Grandma the first time I saw them on the show years ago. I was tickled when Grandpa expressed maybe you all were having too many kids. But, he and Grandma loved and taught each one that was featured on an episode. To me, Grandma was someone I aspire to emulate. He love for the Lord always in the forefront of all she did. I never had the opportunity to know my grandparents. I was born late in my parent’s lives. I want to be a Grandma to my someday grandbabies just like she was. Love to each of you.

We all know she is in a much happier place, and with the man she had married here on earth. We re saddened by her unexpected passing, but so blessed and honored to have met her through the show. They both are now waiting for all the family to join them one day. They are their with Jubilee. So glad the kids could grow up knowing her and having her a part of their lives. She had a quiet and gentle spirit which is of great value to the Lord. She ran a good race. No one can ever take her place. Again so sad to hear she is gone. She is not lost or missing. She has gone home to be with the Lord.

I was always touched by the deep love that Grandma Duggar showed to all of her family during the show. Yesterday as I read heartfelt posts from her grandchildren i couldn’t help but notice how each one told of her love for Jesus and how she never failed to share His love with someone else. What a woman she must have been (and still is in heaven). What a perfect picture of being filled with the Holy Spirit, to be remembered for having never missed an opportunity to share such a great love as we have in our Savior! I can picture her holding Jesus’s hand as He shows her His great kingdom! One day she will meet us all there! I know some of the tears I shed are for the Duggar family loss as well. You all have been so unfairly judged by many who have not that right! God is our judge, not this world! My favorite thing i remember is when thet went to Nashville and Amy was going to get a tattoo and Grandma Mary was trying to stop her by giving her scripture verses. I thought Amy was so mean for that prank but Grandma was steadfast in her convictions.

I’m incredibly sorry for your loss, but praise the Lord that she is safe with Him now and you will all see her again one day xx I loved seeing her relationship with her grandchildren and her interest in their lives, and seeing how much they loved her in return. Two episodes spring to mind, first where the girls did a pamper day for her, washing her feet, giving her a facial, etc. The second was after Josie had been born, and Amy and Anna wanted to learn how to crochet booties for her. Grandma Duggar was trying to help them learn, but it didn’t quite go to plan! (Crochet can be hard at first! lol!) Her love and patience shone through as she had fun with the two of them.

My heart and prayers are with your family. I loved watching Grandma Duggar on your show. I had the privilege of meeting her once when I saw her in a store when I was on vacation. She graciously talked to me and even let me take a selfie with her. I also know she was a woman of prayer and I asked her to pray for my daughter who was struggling with infertility. My grandson will be four in August that she prayed for.
So sorry for your loss of Grandma Dugger. Watching her life with yours truly changed me as a parent as I adopted a more caring and selfless attitude for my children and family. She made a difference in people’s lives and you (and others such as me) are proof of it. I am saddened by your loss of Grandma Duggar, but rejoice with you that she has gained eternity in God’s presence. I don’t get to see many of your shows, because we serve overseas as missionaries. But I always admired her for opening her home to you all for a holiday meal (was it Thanksgiving? – I can’t remember!). I love to host, and no group of people is too small for me. Many might squirm over 20+ people coming over for dinner, but I loved her grace and humor with which she served (or at least what the producers showed us!). That episode encouraged me to always find humor, even in the most difficult of hosting challenges (yes, I’ve had a few!). Thank you for sharing her life and your lives with the world! <3

Dear Duggar Family, My name is Kathy. I met your grandma Mary about 10 years ago in passing. She was in Branson with Deanna to attend a charity fund raiser. I thought she looked familiar, so I asked her..”Are you related to the Duggars?” Yes .. she said. Then she gave me one of her megawatt smiles, which impressed me so much. Her love for others, even strangers was demonstrated in that smile. Even though I have lived in the Branson area for some time, where people tend to be friendlier, I had just moved here from Los Angeles. where no one talks to each other and a smile towards you from a complete stranger is so much harder to come by. In Los Angeles, where I was born and raised people tend to be on their guard. It isn’t like here, where they wave to you from their cars if you are out taking a walk, even people that don’t know you. Anyway, she handed me a Duggar Family photo postcard, that she pulled out from her purse. She was so sweet! I watch your show … because it is sweet and I like the Christian programming. Please accept my condolences. May your grandmother be blessed in her meeting with her Lord. With gratitude for having met her. All Best Wishes for your Family!

I’ve always found comfort in this scripture Job 14:5. Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass; Although we are never ready to lose a loved one, God’s timing is perfect. Thankful for her testimony that she is in heaven the moment she drew her last breath here. What a glorious thought!!!!
Her legacy lives on with her children and their children’s children. Such a spirited lady who lived what she preached. Wish the family with each adult individually/@ chapter, would write another book– written BY THEM. Advice at how they navigate daily issues would be great if written by them without ghostwriters… including Grandma’s advice.

She let my daughter take a picture with her. And even invited us to the church they were going to sing at. And then brought us a CD with beautiful music. She very much touched our hearts!

Dear Duggar Family. My dad just passed away 2 years ago and I always find it odd when people are giving their condolences they usually say…sorry for your loss. Well my dad is not lost and neither is Mary! I didn’t loose my dad, and you did not loose Mary. They’re in heaven! We know exactly where they are! Correct!! I’m sure you all are still in a state of shock, and Praise God he is carrying you through this most diffucult time. I’m not quite sure all these years later, and not much was seen or heard during this time, but I think she was a huge shoulder and inspiration when Josh and Anna were going through their rough time. I would almost say that without that Godly womans guildance they might not have made it. Our brotherly and sisterly love to all of you during this truly sad time. Stunned at the news of Grandma Mary’s passing. I have enjoyed watching her on TLC throughout the years. What always resonated with me was she seemed to be such a loving, Godly woman, content to quietly serve those around her. She never sought the spotlight for herself…just happily & lovingly served wherever she felt the Lord needed her most…truly a picture of a Christ-like woman if ever I’ve seen one! As Jana said, she worshipped her Savior in the morning then He called her home later that same day. I couldn’t think of a better way to spend MY last day here on Earth, either. She is now seated at the right hand of her Savior, rejoicing in Heaven for all eternity in her perfect Heavenly body…Grandma Duggar is golden! I pray for strength, peace & comfort for her loved ones at this difficult time. I pray that their continued faith carry them through. We thank God for the life of Mary Lester Duggar & her legacy that lives on in her family. She will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered.

I can’t name just one episode there have been so many with grandma that I loved. Her wisdom being shared, her laughter and sense of humor and mostly her loving and giving heart. I wish I had known Grandma Dugger, as my life might have turned out differently had I experienced her great love for her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Grandma Duggar was America’s Grandma, and she will be mourned and missed by so many who never met her but admired and respected her immensely. I will be 60 in August, and hope to reconnect with Jesus, and take my grandson to church on Sunday. My sincerest condolences to the Duggar family. Though I do not know you as a family I feel that I have watched you all from the beginning of the TV series. I am so sorry for your loss of Mrs. Duggar.
Though I only knew her from television Grandma Duggar seemed like a kind and caring person. I am so sorry for your loss of her earthly presence.
I am so sorry for your loss of a great women. I have followed the Duggar family since the reality show started. I have to say that at times, I thought of all of the “joy” your family (ies) have in your hearts that have made me happy. All of the weddings and new babies. I am mostly a lone in my life and when “Counting On” comes on, I look forward to your show so I can imagine being with you all. When “Ivy” was born and her name was announced, I had to smile. I live on “Ivy Lane” (in Florida). Thank you for the fun, happiness, love and joy you all bring to my heart. God continue to bless all.

Mary Duggar was a lovely and loving Christian lady and I am so very sorry for this great loss to all the clan!!! I know she was a great light to all and very beloved!!! I am praying for the whole clan at this time of mourning!!
May Our Lord & Savior give the family comfort and Strength. And know its so hard to loose a loved one even tho we know she is in heaven dancing and singing. She is Home.

the Duggars are my favorite family, i watched them all the time and some of their kids are grown up and married with kids. I am so sorry for the loss of the Grandma i know how that feel, i just want to say God bless all of you and hope you have a long and God fearing future.

God is amazing bringing Ivy Jean Seewald into this word on Great-Grandma’s earth birthday as a reminder that she is still here within the hearts of all who knew her. I’m a but behind on finding out about the passing of Grandma Duggar but as soon as I came across the info online that told of this great loss, I was extremely saddened. I want to extend my condolences & offer up a prayer for your family that God will continue to give your family the strength needed to walk through the days ahead. It is such a wonderful blessing to know that you will see her again because she’s with her Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ. Her life was such a wonderful testimony of how to live your life with God’s will for your life in mind. God bless all of you!
Although I live in England, I have followed the Duggar story for some years. I was so sorry to read that she had passed away. She was devoted to her family as they were to her. I would like to express my sincere condolences to all her family members. She was a beautiful, and caring woman. God Bless all her family and give them comfort at this sad time for them.
